These are NOT anabolic steroids, which are used by some athletes to build muscle. Before starting steroids, it is important that your MS team or GP check for signs of an infection, which should include a test for a urinary tract infection. If you are unwell, for example if you have a cold, a bladder infection or a stomach bug, you will often find that your MS symptoms get worse. Once you have recovered from the cold or treated the infection, your symptoms should start to improve.
Mood and behaviour changes

If you have Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis (ASUC)
Steroid tablets that are taken for a short period of time are unlikely to cause side effects. Steroids that are injected into muscles and joints may cause some pain and swelling at the site of the injection. A high dose of inhaled steroids can sometimes cause more serious side effects but this is rare.
Talk to your healthcare team about when you’ll be able to have a steroid injection if you’ve recently had a vaccination, or if you’re due to have one soon. Taking steroid tablets for a long time can make you more likely to get infections. If you feel feverish or unwell, or develop any new symptoms after starting steroids, it’s important to tell your doctor or rheumatology nurse.
Talk to your doctor or nurse about any of these side effects. Take your tablets after a meal or with milk as they can irritate your stomach. It can help to change a few things about when and where you sleep.
We recommend that you have the flu vaccine every year while taking steroids. If any changes to the dose are needed then the hospital will tell your GP. If you take any of these medicines we might need to make some changes or monitor you more closely. Possession of steroids for personal use isn’t illegal in the UK.
